Why a Tummy Tuck?

In 2022, around 162,000 abdominoplasties (tummy tucks) were performed in the United States alone—this meant a 37% increase from pre-pandemic times, and a 50% increase among members of Generation X, according to the ASPS. While one might tend to think that it is out of sheer vanity, reasons for undergoing surgery vary, among them, are:

  • Abdominal muscle separation: Abdominal muscles may separate during pregnancy or weight gain, causing a visible bulge and functional weakness. A tummy tuck repairs this muscle separation, restoring core strength and stability.
  • Chronic back pain relief: Weakened or separated abdominal muscles can lead to poor posture and chronic lower back pain. Repairing the muscle wall often provides significant pain relief.
  • Improved posture: Strengthening the abdominal wall helps with overall posture, balance, and ability to perform daily activities without strain.
  • Urinary incontinence: some women experience stress incontinence after childbirth due to weakened pelvic floor muscles. Abdominal repair can sometimes help reduce these symptoms.
  • Skin health issues after massive weight loss: excess skin from massive weight loss can cause rashes, infections, or hygiene problems in skin folds. Removing this excess skin eliminates these health concerns.
  • Psychological well-being: The mental health benefits of feeling comfortable in one’s own skin can be considered a medical concern, especially for those with body dysmorphia or depression related to physical changes.

But What Is It?

A tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen and tighten the appearance of the area. The end result is a trimmer, tighter, and fitter silhouette that looks natural and promotes a feeling of rejuvenation and confidence.

What Is Involved in a Tummy Tuck?

☝ First things first: Antesthesia. A tummy tuck is an invasive procedure, therefore, the surgical team will provide anesthesia, which can be local or general (mostly used). The decision whether to apply one or the other depends on the extent of the procedure (full/ mini), and the patient’s medical history and preference.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

1️⃣ Primary Incision

Dr. Fodero makes the main incision just above the pubic area; it is positioned so that underwear or swimwear can conceal the resulting scar.

2️⃣ Navel Separation

The second incision is made around the belly button so as to free the navel from the surrounding tissue.

3️⃣ Tissue Elevation & Muscle Repair

Dr. Fodero lifts the skin and fat layers upward to expose the underlying abdominal muscles. Subsequently, he sutures the abdominal muscles together and closer to create a tighter core. As a result, the abdomen will look flatter and the waistline will look narrower.

4️⃣ Skin Repositioning

The skin and fat layer is stretched back down over the repaired muscles and a new opening is created for the belly button. Small drainage tubes are inserted through tiny holes below the main incision to allow excess fluids to drain during healing.

5️⃣ Closure

The team suture closes all incisions and applies surgical bandages to protect the incisions.

Recovery and Results

After the procedure, you will need to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and provide support as you heal. After 7-14 days after the surgery, you will need to go to a follow up consultation where your doctor will remove your drainage tubes.

As with any invasive procedure, you should expect a little pain, bruising and swelling in the area—it will subside as weeks progress.
