Advanced Eyelid Correction: A Guide For Patients
Everything you Need to Know Before Your Consultation
⬇ Scroll the Guide
1. What Is Advanced Eyelid Correction?
Advanced Eyelid Correction, or eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic or functional surgical procedure to correct the way eyes look and feel. It is one of the most common procedures in the United States to address tired-looking eyes, excess skin, droopy eyelids, or circles around the eyes. It can also help with eyesight problems such as lack of peripheral vision and dry eyes. Advanced Eyelid Correction can be performed by a surgeon with more than one operative approach, often determined by characteristics like brow position and cheekbone projection.
2. Types of Advanced Eyelid Correction
There are different kinds of Advanced Eyelid Correction or eyelid surgery, depending on the patient’s aesthetics or functional goals. They can address the upper or lower lid, or both (Asian double eyelid surgery). Below is a brief description of each.
2.a. Upper Advanced Eyelid Correction
With an upper eyelid Advanced Eyelid Correction, the fold of sagging skin and, in some cases, the protruding fat from below your eyebrow are removed. The incision is made within the natural crease of your eyelid, becoming almost invisible once it heals. Most patients who choose this procedure stop having trouble with their peripheral vision and get a youthful appearance.
2.b. Lower Advanced Eyelid Correction
Lower Advanced Eyelid Correction targets the excess skin in your under-eye bags that causes puffiness and a lack-of-sleep look. Depending on your needs and what the surgeon determines is best for you, you may require a removal or repositioning of your fat pads, a tightening of the muscle layer, an excision of excess skin, or a combination of these procedures.
If you want to achieve a youthful, harmonious look, Advanced Eyelid Correction can be combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures like face lift, brow lift, or injectables like Botox and Dysport.
Upper and lower eyelid Advanced Eyelid Correction are indicated for the treatment of excess skin and/or orbital fat.
2.c. Asian Advanced Eyelid Correction
Asian Advanced Eyelid Correction, also known as double eyelid surgery, is popular amongst Asian patients who want to soften their natural features. While it’s similar to upper blepharoplasty, what makes them different is that during an Asian Advanced Eyelid Correction there is no excess skin or tissue to cut, and only a very small amount is removed to create a thin yet noticeable crease close to the eyelashes, which is a slightly lower point compared to Western eyelids.
3. Why People Seek Advanced Eyelid Correction
Advanced Eyelid Correction patients normally seek this procedure for functional and cosmetic reasons, some of them being the following:
- Improving their sight, as excess skin can obstruct their peripheral vision.
- Reducing signs of aging like puffiness and sagging skin, which causes a “tired” look.
- To avoid or improve dry eyes, which can be caused by a drooping lower eyelid.
- Enhancing their natural features by improving facial symmetry.
- Changing the look of their gaze, so it looks more energetic, youthful and appealing.

- Eye diseases like glaucoma or detached retina.
- Thyroid disorders, like Graves’ disease, hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
- Cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or other heart health disorders.

5. Before, During & After Advanced Eyelid Correction
5.a. Before the surgery
To start your Advanced Eyelid Correction journey, the first step is booking a consultation with your provider. When you meet with your doctor, you’ll have the opportunity to share your medical records, talk about your current health needs and, most importantly, your desired outcomes. In response, the doctor will determine which type of eyelid surgery fits you the best, and assess your overall health before entering the surgery. On the day of, your provider will administer anesthesia, either through targeted injection or general anesthesia.
5.b. During the surgery
When the Advanced Eyelid Correction starts, the surgeon will mark the spots where the incision is going to be made, whether it’s upper or lower lid. Fat that can be found in two compartments, either central or medial, is removed. The excess skin is then excised, and the incisions are closed using very fine sutures.
If the patient wants their gaze to look more alert and active, the surgeon can also reshape the contours of the lids by making other small incisions and removing a very small amount of tissue.
5.c. After the procedure
After surgery, you will be in a recovery room, and may have these symptoms:
- Blurred vision.
- Watering eyes.
- Light sensitivity.
- Double vision.
- Puffy, numb eyelids.
- Swelling and bruising similar to having black eyes.
- Pain or discomfort.
6. What to Expect from a Consultation
If you are thinking about getting an eyelid surgery, it is imperative that you have a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During your appointment, your provider will go over your medical history, prepare a personalized plan, and discuss realistic outcomes.
6.a. What to Look for in a Specialist
Although a physician with a medical license can legally perform blepharoplasties, a plastic surgeon who has been certified by the ABMS and the ABPS has had a formal residency in Plastic Surgery, has passed rigorous written and oral specialized examinations, and knows the intricacies of the specialization’s ethics and standards.
